The ballroom was a vision of quiet luxury. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling like frozen constellations, their light spilling softly over marble floors polished to a mirror shine. Ivory drapes framed tall glass windows, allowing the city lights outside to glow like distant stars. Gold accents traced the edges of tables dressed in pristine white linen, each adorned with fresh lavender and white roses - chosen carefully, elegant but not loud. Conversations hummed in measured tones, laughter restrained, heels clicking gently against the floor as power and poise gathered under one roof.
Then she arrived.
Radhika Malik entered with her parents -- Raguveer Malik and Rachna Malik.
There was no announcement, no pause in the music...and yet, something shifted.
She stepped into the ballroom beside her father, clad in a lavender gown that flowed like a soft evening mist. The fabric caught the chandelier light with every movement, subtle and graceful, neither shimmering too brightly nor fading into the crowd. The dress hugged her form with quiet elegance, its silhouette refined, its color rare...the kind that softened the air around her rather than demanding attention.
Her hair fell neatly over her shoulders, styled simply, allowing her natural beauty to speak for itself. There was nothing excessive about her...no heavy jewelry, no deliberate attempt to stand out...and yet eyes followed her all the same. Not because she sought notice, but because she carried an ease that couldn’t be taught. She looked ethereal, like she belonged to the evening rather than arrived for it.
As she walked further into the hall, the soft lavender of her gown blended seamlessly with the décor, as though the night itself had dressed her to match. She moved with quiet confidence, her presence gentle yet unmistakable--a calm note in a symphony of ambition and grandeur.
It was her first appearance before the public after all these years. After that night...
Not because she had ever wished to hide, but because safety had become paramount. After what had happened years ago, her father could not afford to take risks.
The fear of never seeing her again.
The terror of losing her once more to a cruel world.
The agony of those endless weeks of separation...
they had taught him enough.
Enough to never be careless again.
Enough to stand as her shield...against the world, against everyone.
This appearance was not for spectacle.
It carried purpose.
Because Raguveer Malik now sought a groom for his daughter.
And the man had already been chosen.
Sparsh Agarwal.
A man who had achieved more than most ever could at his age...not merely wealth, but power and respect. He was no ordinary figure. Sparsh Agarwal had carved a place for himself in the ruthless business world, earning every ounce of his standing.
For months, Raguveer Malik had watched him in silence, observing, measuring, waiting...ensuring that if he entrusted his daughter to anyone, she would be safe, protected, and cherished.
The gala was alive in every possible way.
Dancers spun beneath the chandeliers, singers poured their voices into the air, and the orchestra played without pause - each note crafted to dazzle, to distract, to impress.
To Radhika, it was nothing more than noise.
As tedious as watching a snail inch across a road, slow and purposeless, while the world waited for it to move.
She smiled on cue.
Spoke only when politeness demanded it.
Walked beside her parents, greeting unfamiliar faces, accepting glances that lingered a second too long.
No one would ever suspect this was her first gala. Not from the way she held her spine straight, or how her steps never faltered. Not from the calm in her voice, or the elegance with which she moved through a hall full of strangers.
But beneath that composure lived memory.
Fear learned the hard way.
Silence born from survival.
She was Radhika Malik -- and retreat had never been an option for her.
She carried her fear not as a weakness, but as armor. Worn, tested, heavy. And like a crown...once trembling on her brow, fragile and unsure...now lifted high, burnished by every moment she had endured, every time she had chosen to stand when the world had tried to break her.
“Miss Malik,” a man with an effortlessly charming smile approached her.
“Mr. Rawal,” she acknowledged him with a polite smile. He was, so far, the only genuinely pleasant person she had met that evening - courteous, respectful, and refreshingly sincere. And truth be told, Adhnan Rawal’s charm was difficult to resist. Radhika was hardly the only one who noticed.
“Oh, don’t be so formal with me,” he drawled lightly. “Call me Adhnan.”
“Nice to meet you, Adhnan,” Radhika replied, her smile softening.
“Hayeee!” he exclaimed dramatically, pressing a hand to his chest.
Radhika chuckled.
“May I have this dance, my lady?” he asked, bowing with exaggerated elegance as he extended his hand.
“Of course,” she said, placing her hand in his - her smile genuine.
As they stepped toward the dance floor, Radhika felt it.
A gaze. Steady. Unwavering.
She didn’t turn, didn’t falter, but the air shifted all the same...like a pause between heartbeats. Somewhere in the crowd, unseen eyes followed her every step, sharp with interest, heavy with intent.
The music swelled.
The lights glittered.
And unaware---or perhaps unwilling to acknowledge it...Radhika danced on, while someone watched in silence.

On the other side of the hall stood Sparsh Agarwal-the man with a polite smile and an unmistakable aura of power-holding a drink as he engaged in conversation with a few businessmen.
He felt the shift in the air the moment she arrived.
It wasn’t as though they had ever met.
He had never seen her before.
There was nothing overt-nothing deliberately attention-seeking about her presence.
Yet the instant she entered his line of sight ----
he paused.
Blink.
And stared.
Then, slowly, deliberately, he took a sip from the drink in his hand, his gaze absorbing her in quiet assessment.
His eyes lingered.
Not fleeting. Not improper.
Just long enough.
Long enough for his parents to notice.
Rituraj Agarwal and Sukanya Agarwal exchanged a look -- one too layered for an outsider to decipher...
Her presence wasn’t loud, yet it was firm.
It didn’t demand attention, yet it claimed it effortlessly.
Not extravagant.
But unmistakable.
Sparsh excused himself, intent on approaching her...only to be intercepted by a few acquaintances.
By the time he freed himself, he noticed his parents already in conversation with Mr. and Mrs. Malik - her parents. It wasn’t unusual. The two families had shared a strong business relationship for years.
He walked toward them.
“Mr. Malik , Mrs. Malik,” he greeted respectfully.
“Oh, son, quit the act,” Raguveer Malik said with a smile, prompting chuckle from them
Sparsh’s polite expression softened into something genuine.
“How are you, beta?” Mrs. Malik asked, her voice warm with maternal affection.
“I’m all good and handsome, sweetheart,” Sparsh replied, draping an easy arm over Rachna Malik’s shoulder with a playful grin.
“How many times do I have to warn you not to flirt with my wife?” Mr. Malik protested in mock anger, pulling her close by the waist...earning a shy blush from her.
“How can I not,” Sparsh drawled, “when Aunty looks so young and beautiful?”
“I’m telling you, Rituraj and Bhabhi ji,” Mr. Malik said, shaking his head though smiling wide, “one day I’m going to break your son’s nose.”
“Did you hear that, Aunty?” Sparsh said, putting on an exaggeratedly wounded expression. “Your husband is cruel.”
“Can you both stop it?” the two women said in unison.
Laughter followed--warm, effortless, familiar.
And yet, even as the conversation flowed, Sparsh’s attention drifted--back to the dance floor, to the girl whose quiet presence had shifted something he hadn’t known was waiting to be disturbed.
.
.
.
Radhika and Adhnan swung through the hall, the music weaving around them, bodies moving in practiced harmony.
Then the MC’s voice rose above the orchestra...announcing the change of partners.
Adhnan let go of Radhika’s hand mid-spin.
The sudden release sent her turning---straight into a solid chest.
She gasped.
Her step faltered, the floor seeming to tilt beneath her feet...
until a firm hand caught her at the waist and pulled her back, steady and unyielding.
Her hands landed on his shoulders. Instinct. Reflex.
When she looked up...
the breath left her lungs.
Her heart skipped
Time thinned.
Sound dulled.
The hall seemed to shrink to the space between them.
Sparsh Agarwal stood before her.
His hold was controlled, protective, deliberate--as though he had calculated the moment before it arrived. His gaze met hers, intense enough to still the air, heavy with something unspoken. Around them, dancers shifted, partners changed, music resumed...but between them, everything remained suspended.
Neither moved.
Neither spoke.
Then the orchestra struck a new rhythm.
And Sparsh tightened his grip...just enough...
as the world waited to see whether she would step away…
or stay.
